The Week in Quantum Computing. Brought to you by Sergio Gago (@piratecto).
Quick Recap
Entangled Ions at a distance in Australia, a great piece on QNLP. ICFO has published a great infographic on how quantum cryptography works (in Catalan, but pretty easy to understand). China goes full steam ahead with their production of quantum chips and in parallel applying them to combat financial fraud. QuIC, QED-C, Q-STAR and QIC as some of the leading consortiums for quatnum sign a MoU to do more stuff together (which is fantastic!). DARPA choses Microsoft for their Quantum projects and Q-CTRL cashes in $27.4 additional million to their series B extension led by Salesforce Ventures. Meanwhile TuringQ in China announced an “undisclosed” series A of “millions” for optical chips.
#QHack2023 and the meme of the week
Are you a business leader and your company is interested in Quantum? (Whether you are already acting on it or not, at Moody’s we want your opinion. This survey will take you 5 minutes to fill and we will send you the results of the research, and you will have first access to some of the developments we are about to publish during this quarter. Acess the survey here. (We are also taking interviews for a qualitative approach. Whether your company is working on this or not we would love to get your opinions. Please reach out to me for more info)
The Week in Quantum Computing
Paper: Hands-On Quantum Sensing with NV− Centers in Diamonds
The physical properties of diamond crystals, such as color or electrical conductivity, can be controlled via impurities. In particular, when doped with nitrogen, optically active nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV), can be induced. The center is an outstanding quantum spin system that enables, under ambient conditions, optical initialization, readout, and coherent microwave control with applications in sensing and quantum information. Under optical and radio frequency excitation, the Zeeman splitting of the degenerate states allows the quantitative measurement of external magnetic fields with high sensitivity. This study provides a pedagogical introduction to the properties of the NV centers as well as a step-by-step process to develop and test a simple magnetic quantum sensor based on color centers with significant potential for the development of highly compact multisensor systems.

Going Beyond Regular Limits of Optical Imaging By Using Quantum Information
A revolution is under way in optical microscopy where the quantum properties of light are exploited to extract additional information from quantum correlations that are absent in the classical interpretation. Such quantum information brings new possibilities but also its own set of limitations. Here, we develop a broader computational imaging approach to fuse quantum and classical information to provide a general solution that jointly exploits both forms of information for super-resolution microscopy.

Exploring the Industrial Relevance of QNLP
One of the most demanding—yet fascinating—challenges that researchers, scientists and academics are facing is understanding the mathematics of language.
In this context, the discipline that deals with defining and applying models and tools to the treatment of natural language is called computational linguistics (CL). By nature, CL is interdisciplinary, as it combines methods and techniques of linguistics with those of computer science, artificial intelligence (AI) and statistics.
