Quick Recap
Amazing week with advances in simulation, funding and networking. We got a pseudo working memory and a 33km entangled particle over dark fiber which pushes forward the “quantum internet” dream. NVidia has been working hard and released their quantum-hpc-hybrid framework (QODA) with a few partnerships available right off the bat. Quantinuum and Honeyweel keep improving their trapped ions. BosonQPsi raises half million in pre-seed for materials simulation. Dwave prepares a prototype of the next Advantage chip (but still ways to go for their 7000 ennealing qubits), and a very nice piece on what quantum advantage is. Are we going to rest during the summer? I don’t think so.
On hype: A great conversation has happened this week over twitter and linkedin because of Quantonation’s post:
Some have considered this hype generation and bashed about it. Some other consider it part of the dreaming game. Please share your opinion here.
Incidentally, Quantonation Ventures announces the final closing of its first fund dedicated to Quantum Technologies at € 91 million, exceeding its initial target of €50 million. Within three years, Quantonation has been able to put on a launch pad the most promising Quantum Tech companies in the world and establish itself as the largest investor in the field.
Finally, for the techies of you, one of the best repositories I’ve found with EVERYTHING on Quantum Machine Learning. Papers, resources, frameworks, demos, etc. That’s it, I just destroyed your summer :)
The Week in Quantum Computing
D-Wave’s 500-Qubit Machine Hits the Cloud
When quantum-computing pioneer D-Wave releases its next-generation Advantage2 system in 2023 or 2024, the company expects its 7,000-qubit machine to be the most powerful quantum computer of its kind in the world. Now D-Wave is making an experimental prototype of Advantage2 immediately available for use over the cloud.

Quantum Algorithms Conquer a New Kind of Problem
Computer scientists have found a new type of problem that quantum computers can solve dramatically faster than their classical counterparts. In 1994, a mathematician figured out how make a quantum computer do something that no ordinary classical computer could.

Entangling single atoms over 33km telecom fibre
Quantum networks promise to provide the infrastructure for many disruptive applications, such as efficient long-distance quantum communication and distributed quantum computing1,2. Central to these networks is the ability to distribute entanglement between distant nodes using photonic channels.

Quantum Advantage Showdowns Have No Clear Winners
Last month, physicists at Toronto-based startup Xanadu published a curious experiment in Nature in which they generated seemingly random numbers. During the pandemic, they built a tabletop machine named Borealis, consisting of lasers, mirrors, and over a kilometer of optical fiber.

When is the right time to start?
While many organizations understand that quantum computing is probably part of their future, their executives might ask themselves: how soon is that future and when should I start preparing for it? The method of answering these questions is not unique to quantum computing.

Navigating the quantum storm – Fact Based Insight
The quantum technology sector faces a confluence of factors that will challenge its development over the next 2-3 years. Quantum technology sees itself as a technology for the long term. Can’t it stand apart from short term market disturbances? Things are not so simple.

Introducing QODA: The Platform for Hybrid Quantum-Classical Computing
The past decade has seen quantum computing leap out of academic labs into the mainstream. Efforts to build better quantum computers proliferate at both startups and large companies. And while it is still unclear how far we are away from using quantum advantage on common problems, it is clear that now is the time to build the tools needed to deliver valuable quantum applications.
To start, we need to make progress in our understanding of quantum algorithms. Last year, NVIDIA announced cuQuantum, a software development kit (SDK) for accelerating simulations of quantum computing. Simulating quantum circuits using cuQuantum on GPUs enables algorithms research with performance and scale far beyond what can be achieved on quantum processing units (QPUs) today. This is paving the way for breakthroughs in understanding how to make the most of quantum computers.

Companies cannot afford to be left behind in the quantum revolution
The last two months have seen a number of headline-grabbing announcements about technology based on quantum physics. US President Joe Biden signed two presidential decrees on quantum information science (QIS) in May. The UK Ministry of Defence bought a homegrown quantum computer in June. And at the end of June, Nato launched its €1bn innovation fund to invest in dual-purpose “deep tech”. This should be a wake-up call to senior executives, over 80 per cent of whom don’t expect quantum computing to play a significant role in their industry until 2030, according to EY’s recent Quantum Readiness Survey 2022.

Quantum Milestone: Turning a Corner with Trapped Ions
When it comes to transporting ions, researchers at Quantinuum have turned a corner. Both literally and figuratively. The Quantinuum team can now move two different types of ions through a junction in a surface trap, a tiny electrode-filled device at the heart of trapped ion quantum computers.
