Commercialising Quantum – May 17th-19th 2022
The Economist's Commercialising Quantum – May 17th-19th 2022 | Virtual & London
The final day of the “Commercialising Quantum” conference will examine the need for a quantum code of conduct and explore how to mitigate risk with dual technologies. As the timeline to defend against quantum attacks and the timeline for them being real begins to overlap, we will assess how we can revamp our encryption infrastructure to become quantum safe.
Themes on Thursday 19th May include: Quantum communications and cryptography, Techno nationalism, Quantum ethics.
Companies speaking virtually include: BP, Gulf Bank, Toshiba Corporation, U.S. Department of Energy, Wells Fargo, Quantum AI Institute and many more.

Quick Recap
This week’s spotlight goes to IBM’s updated roadmap and sales predictions, giving us a Kookaburra with > 4000 qubits by 2025. With their runtimes this could mean advantage for many of the use cases we currently play with today.
A great piece analyzing in detail IonQ’s short from Scorpion and the response from the industry. ColdQuanta acquires Super Tech (more consolidation!). A timeline on when Shor will destroy our internet and thoughts on qubit scalability.
Classiq has released a Quantum Competition with nice prices for those who dare to solve some circuits optimizing the quantum depth. Description and registration here: https://www.classiq.io/competition

The Ideal Qubit? Future Quantum Computers Could Crunch Data With Single Electrons on Neon Ice
The digital world—your laptop, the internet it’s connected to, and the companies that make it all go—sits on a foundation of bits. These bits are the language digital computers speak. Bits come in two flavors: Numerically, these two states are represented as ones and zeroes.

Video: IBM Quantum 2022 Updated Development Roadmap
Jay Gambetta, IBM Fellow and VP of Quantum Computing, unveils the updated IBM Quantum development roadmap through to 2025. We now believe we have what it takes to scale quantum computers into what we’re calling quantum-centric supercomputers, making it easier than ever for our clients to incorpo
Expanding the IBM Quantum roadmap to anticipate the future of quantum-centric supercomputing
A challenge of near-term quantum computation is the limited number of available qubits. Suppose we want to run a circuit for 400 qubits, but we only have 100 qubit devices available. What do we do? Read about circuit knitting with classical communication.

Turning A Million-Qubit Quantum Computing Dream Into Reality
James Clarke believes quantum computing won’t become practical until the industry is making chips crammed with upwards of a million error-corrected quantum bits.
The goal of making a quantum system with that many qubits isn’t unique to any one company — IBM, Google and startups like PsiQuantum have all stated plans to build such grandiose machines — but Clarke, director of quantum hardware at Intel, thinks the semiconductor giant has a unique advantage in making this reality possible with its manufacturing-driven development approach.

Will quantum computing ever be available off-the-shelf?
It goes without saying that quantum computing is complex. But people buy extraordinarily complex things through simple processes every day. After all, few smartphone buyers know how their devices work.
